Maella dates back to Medieval times and situated on a hillside next to the river Matarrana. Surrounded by peach and cherry orchards, wine yards, olive and almond plantations the village, with its winding and narrow streets, feels a bit like stepping back in time. Walk around and find little quaint shops like Butchers and Greengrocers, but most of all life lived without stress. Here people take time to have a chat, nobody is running, the street Cafés and Restaurants are filled with people simply meeting and all generations mix. The locals are welcoming and helpful; people share each other’s history in a village and no-one is a stranger, as a new inhabitant you will soon become part of the village.
The village breathes history and almost wherever you walk you find historical traces like the ruins of a Castle, an old bell tower, a gothic ruin, a medieval church; the village also hosts a Pablo Gargallo museum situated in the house he grew up in. There are also Supermarkets, a 24-hour medical centre, banks, a school and kindergarten facility, a small hostel etc. and some industry; mostly agricultural; producing wine, olive oil and fruit. In the outskirt of the village there is a lovely public swimming pool and a bull fighting arena. The surrounding area provides ample resources for cycling or trekking in unspoilt nature and the amazing river Ebro famous worldwide for its giant Catfish is also nearby.
