Ricote is the only town within the Ricote Valley itself that doesn´t lie adjacent to the River Segura. This traditional Spanish town is surrounded with mountains, the highest of which is the Sierra de Ricote, Pico de Almeces at 1,124m. The extensive pine forests regularly attract adventure tourism and nature lovers. It is the oldest town of the valley that has defined the history of the region. This ancient stronghold is a quiet town set in fertile countryside and chalky sandstone hills where the vines that produce the rich, dark local wines are grown. Cultivation in the fields in mainly olives and almond trees. An impressive example is La Olivera Gorda, an olive tree reputed to be 1200 years old with a circumference of 6.9 meters, it was planted in the Middle Ages. This area is suitable for all grades of climbers and has an extensive network of walks.
