The apartment is situated in the newly developed part of La Manga, directly onto the canal entrance to the Tomas Maestre marina, having wonderful views of the Mediterranean and the many yachts and boats as they pass by.
It is a few minutes walk to the nearest beach and 5 minutes by car to the newly opened 9-hole pitch and putt/driving range. (approx. 20 euros for 9 holes, including club hire.)
The Mar Menor
The warm, shallow waters of the Mar Menor make this a paradise for those keen on watersports of all descriptions. It is known as a fantastic natural swimming pool with temperatures an average 5 degrees higher than the Mediterranean, sometimes as high as 27 or 30 degrees in the summer. Winter temperatures are cooler, but swimming on New Year's Day has been known! The waters have a high saline and mineral content and are recognised as being therapeutic, particularly for the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, etc. People can regularly be seen gathering the black mud on Abity Beach (only 10 minutes walk from the apartment) and covering their bodies in it as 'open air mud therapy'. Several hotels offer mud therapy and thalassotherapy services. The Hotel Cavanna and Entremares are just two of them.
Local Activities
This is a well-placed apartment for access to some great golf courses. Other activities include cycling, fishing, horse-riding, swimming, snorkelling, tennis, walking, water-skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving, jet ski, canoeing and sea fishing. There are several dive sites and lessons are easily arranged.
Bicycles and quad bikes can be hired locally at the marina.
There is a new ferry service operating across the Mar Menor from the marina to Santiago de la Ribera. A lively market is held there on a Wednesday. Crossings are approx. every 2 hours and take 20 minutes. Bicycles are permitted on board for a small extra charge.
Other Amenities
The locality also boasts an area of outstanding natural beauty where many types of birdlife can be found, including the well-known flamingoes which can be seen in winter at the nearby nature reserve. There are also several sites of historical interest in the area. For the more active there is tennis, go-karting, squash and boat trips.
Shopping
There is a bread shop in the next block and an upper supermarket 7 minutes from the apartment. Approximately 1km away, near the marina, are bars, banks and a larger supermarket, with a very good selection of fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish. There is internet access at several bars on the marina (Mar de Copas, Faluas and others).
There are local markets up and down the towns of the Costa Cálida, the closest being that on sundays in the Cabo de Palos area at the start of the strip. This is a popular all-year round market which attracts people from the surrounding areas, offering goods from fruit and vegetables to clothes, shoes, crafts and leather goods. For the more serious shopper, the nearest large town is Cartagena, which has many shops (including El Corte Inglés) and a Carrefour hypermarket. There is also a newly opened shopping outlet on the way to Cartagena with a Carrefour, DIY and clothes shops.
For the adventurous, there is a train service from Los Nietos to Cartagena which allows a relaxed journey taking in splendid coastal scenery before either exploring the culture or retail outlets of the city.
Eating Out
There are many bars and restaurants to choose from both at the marina and along the strip. Paco's Bar is just a few minutes walk from the apartment and has a varied and reasonably priced menu. All types of cuisine are available at the marina, including local Spanish, French and Greek, with fish and seafood recipes a speciality. There is a Burger King restaurant at the entrance to the marina for those who like the occasional familiar 'fast food'.
Perhaps you might like to take advantage of the extra large balcony in the apartment which is perfect for 'al fresco' breakfast, lunch or dinner whilst admiring the breathtaking view, both in winter and summer. Simple or extravagant fresh food is easily prepared in the well-equipped kitchen, which leads directly onto the balcony.
Nightlife
Locally, Paco's Bar is a five minute walk from the apartment and has a relaxed Spanish atmosphere, also serving food. The marina provides bars to suit every taste including the young and lively and families. Manga Norte Bar at the marina entrance boasts live music on several nights a week. La Manga itself has a varied and lively nightlife. It begins in Cabo de Palos, which disguises itself as a quiet fishing village by day, but has a busier atmosphere by night, with some bars staying open until the early hours in peak season. This is also true of the area known as ´Zocos´, further down the strip, which also offers a craft market in peak season. In between, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, with something to suit everyone. There are English/Irish bars offering a 'taste of home'. There is also a casino Bohemia Square, which has bars and restaurants, with a colourful evening market during the summer months. The local bus service runs 24 hourly through the summer and is reasonably priced (1 euro to Cabo de Palos).
All in all, the area has something for everyone - a leisurely beach holiday, an active sporty holiday, a golfers paradise or somewhere to explore the natural attractions and culture of the Costa Cálida. Summers are lively and cosmopolitan and winters are ideal for those in search of peace and quiet. For those who want to get out and about, cultural Cartagena and Murcia are both within an hour´s drive, whilst Benidorm is further north within two hours.
