Bedar is situated in the eastern part of the province of Almeria, the picturesque village is situated on the lower slopes of the Sierra de los Filabres.

From the late 19th century it has developed as a mining community and between 1897 and 1923 a 17.5 km railway line carried iron ore directly from the village to the local port in Garrucha.
During the 20th century the mining ceased altogether in the thirties, and by the 1950s agriculture had become the principle activity.
