This is a unique, historic, property in the Sierra De Las Nieves Biosphere Reserve, Andalucia, only 1 ½ hrs from Malaga Airport and set in glorious, national park, scenery between the villages of Yunquera and El Burgo The potential for development is obvious but for now it is used as a highly successful Yoga/Meditation/Holistic/Walking Retreat/Eco Centre or Mountain Lodge with the owners living and running their business amongst the buildings and grounds of 16th Century Former Barefoot Carmelite Monastery!
The description here has been abridged for reasons of space so for full details of the business please get in touch.
The Land comprises 25 hectares (250,000m2) of old bio diverse evergreen oak forest, mountain pine forests, and includes within that approx 8 hectares of productive olive and almond groves with a very high quality extra virgin olive oil The sellers have left the olive groves fallow so as to improve the organic quality of the holding but the trees could easily be reclaimed if you wanted to resume oil production.
The land is mostly mountainous and there are stunning views everywhere you look. It is a perfect area for hiking as you can walk from the doorstep into the Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere Reserve.
The entrance to the property is a wonderful 9km drive on a good wide track right through the centre of the National Park, which is very well maintained by the Forestry Commission. Part of the entrance track forms some of the signed walking trails in the park, so it is of great interest to walking, cycling or riding enthusiasts.
The Buildings;
The 16th Century Monastic House has a large patio at the front overlooking the valley and mountain, a large open plan kitchen/sitting room with 2 big arches renovated in a sympathetic rustic style, beamed ceilings, old doors etc and an ajoining single room. You walk out of the back doors of the sitting room onto an interior Andaluz patio/garden with an outdoor bathroom, on the other side there is a 50m2 yoga/meditation room in the inner sanctum, the door out of the yoga room leads down a long ancient alleyway that has an amazing old feel and at the end there is a large vaulted store room with a back door leading onto the properties land. The house is heated with a large wood-burning stove. In all these downstairs areas there is still ample room for expansion if necessary.
Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms - 2 single and 1 double, all with the original tiled floors the rooms are the old monastic cells, upstairs is in its original state - it is in a liveable state and sound structural order and with heaps of original features.
The main home comprises a 4 bedroom house that is located in the old monastery building and forms part of a group of 10 houses and a church within the old monastery complex. The other houses are owned by an Andaluz family who use them at weekends. The neighbours are friendly and we enjoy an excellent relationships with them. They also provide a wonderful insight into Andaluz rural life for our guests and can be very useful if you need work done on the land or help of any kind.
The house has running water inside fed by the mountain spring, it is lit by solar power. We have lived in the house as a family, we have used it for guests and staff alike, and it is a very versatile building and solid building that has no problems with damp.
The San Juan Hermitage (located 5 minute walk downhill from the Monastery, best location in the Convento grounds). Amazing location unbroken views, deep quiet, no light pollution. A recently renovated 16th Century Hermitage named after St. John of the Cross now being used as the retreat kitchen, dining and relaxation space Stunning farmhouse open plan kitchen/diner sympathetically restored, very homely feel, and this hermitage would be possible to extend if you wanted more accommodation or living space to add as a family house or business.
