Raval is Barcelona´s most colourful neighbourhood and the closest one to the Port, located in the district of Ciutat Vella and created out of the expansion from the medieval city walls.
Gradually over time the area has become characterised by its winding streets and vernacular architecture, which juxtapose the grid-like urban planning of Eixample, and lend this district plenty of charisma.
Raval merges historical buildings, such as the Romanesque church of San Pablo del Campo, the Church of Sant Agustí and the Boqueria market, with more modern buildings intended for culture and recreation, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) and Barcelona’s Contemporary Culture Centre.
