Why move to Alhaurin de la Torre

Surrounded by abundant natural resources and close to Malaga centre, Alhaurin de la Torre is a quiet place in a convenient location.

Alhaurin de la Torre is an affluent town just a few miles west of Malaga airport. Residents here enjoy the efficient infrastructure of a commuter town, while simultaneously enjoying the landscape carved by the Guadalhorce river. The river runs through the town from the beautiful marble mountains of the Sierra de Mijas.

Alhaurin de la Torre is encompassed by citrus and avocado groves to one side and the coastal resorts, with their water parks, zoos, watersports and nightlife, of the Costa del Sol on the other with Malaga’s museums, art, fiestas, restaurants and shops within easy reach. The centre of Alhaurin de la Torre itself provides a its own selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. There is an annual Flamenco festival, a small but pretty old town to explore and a scattering of traditional churches to admire.

Despite being settled by the Phoenicians, then developed by the Moors, before finally thriving under the Christians, it is neighbouring Alhaurin el Grande that hosts most of the cultural antiquities of the area. However, there are plenty of peaceful places to meander in Alhaurin de la Torre, the El Retiro manor house (a retirement estate, hence the name) and Finca el Portion both have beautiful gardens that are open to the public.

The nearest beach is family friendly La Colina and a short drive will let you dip your toe in the resort life of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, or Fuengirola.  Golfers will find Lauro Golf on their doorstep and Malaga’s oldest course Parador is also nearby.

Community

Alhaurin de la Torre is the 3rd largest town in Malaga after Antequera and Rhonda and the fourth most affluent (with Marbella coming in at number 8). Since 2002, it has grown from a village to thriving town.

Property

The proximity to the countryside makes traditional fincas (farmhouses), chalets or plots of land viable alternatives to the more built-up areas. Alhaurin Golf has plenty of good value apartments and villas while towards the town centre, you’ll find traditional townhouses and modern villas and flats too.

Amenities

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to facilities. There are supermarkets, grocers, hairdressers, clothes shops, pharmacists, vets, gyms, banks and more. The central post office is on Calle Isaac Peral, to the North of town.

Transport

Several public bus services operate out of Alhaurin de la Torre and many private operators too. You can drive to the Plaza Mayor outdoor shopping centre for a train station connecting to Malaga main lines. The airport is reachable in under 15 minutes drive and well serviced by international flights for all budgets. The roads to town include the N-340 and A-7 highways.

Employment

Services are the primary source of jobs within the town itself but this is a place suited to ambitious urban workers looking for solace from the city after a long week.

Health

You’ll find doctors at the modern Centro de Salud, as well as more specialist requirements including an ambulance service. For 24 hour emergency care, head to the Hospital Virgen de la Victoria (El Clínico) in Málaga. There’s everything from cosmetics to orthodontics available within the town.

Schools

El Pinar is a local international school. For non-fee payers, there are the IES Huerta Alta, IES Capellania and CEIP Clara Campoamor schools. For those looking for Montessori, there’s the International Montessori School Caracoliris.

Cost of Living

Homes in this region are popular but new development keeps options available for new buyers. Eating out is about half the price of the coastal resorts but visiting the city can be pricey.
