Why move to Mutxamel

With one foot in the Costa Blanca and the other in the province’s capital city, Mutxamel is a handy town for people who want to live close to the action.

Mutxamel is part of the Alicante ‘vegetable garden’. A city borderland well suited to agriculture thanks to a system of dams and weirs to divert the waters of the Monnegre River built by the Moors.

Tomatoes grow so voraciously in the region that locals propagate their own variety, named the Muchamiel, which has garnered such international acclaim that it even has its own annual festival.

Mutxamel was originally a summer vacation spot for wealthy city workers who came and built second homes there, although none as impressive Palacio de Los Penacerrada in the town centre. It’s only a short drive to either Bianco or San Juan Beach in Alicante or Playa Muchavista, Can Campello or Playa de la Almadraba, a little further along the coast.

On the Casa de la Asegurada, there is an art gallery showing works by Picasso, Dali and Miro. The parish church has a Gothic tower from the 14th century plus the Bonalba Golf Resort & Spa is walking distance from the town centre.

Community

This is a town for workers and families who want to engage with Spanish culture. In 2011, only 5% of inhabitants hailed from European countries other than Spain.

Property

Mutxamel offers mainly villas, bungalows and terraced houses.

Amenities

There is a comprehensive range of services and facilities including a children’s soft play, a sports centre, a decent sized supermarket, a pharmacy, several banks plus restaurants and bars.

Transport

Mutxamel is convenient for a commute to major employers such as the university or the airport.

Health

The Centro Salud Mutxamel is open 24 hours a day and there is a range of hospitals and private clinics in Alicante.

Schools

There are plenty of educational facilities in the Mutxamel area. Some are bi-lingual in Castilian and Valencian and others tri-lingual, adding English to their daily schedule. The English School – connected to the Centro Docente Privado Extranjero Spanish school –  runs a UK curriculum for fee-paying students.

Cost of Living

Mutxamel’s prime city-side location means there’s a bit of a bun fight over real estate; as a result moderately priced properties tend to get snapped up quickly.
