Why move to San Fulgencio

The Costa Calida is a relatively new coast with may newer developments at affordable prices. The area, known as Vega Baja, is a warm, flat verdant valley offering pretty views and health benefits.

The Bishop of Cartagena founded the neat Spanish village of San Fulgencio in 1729 on the newly drained low-lying marshlands of the River Segura. There is a traditional Spanish plaza at the centre, with a small fount surrounded by topiaried trees. Surrounding the original settlement are modern urbanisations populated with mostly international residents.

The closest seaside resorts are Guardamar del Segura and La Marina. Both of which have long strips of golden sand lined with dunes planted with pines. The salt lakes of the larger resorts of Santa Pola and Torrevieja flank them on either side.

In the town, you can eat very well at a handful of local restaurants, enjoy live events at the Cardenal Belluga Auditorium or take in local history at the archaeology museum. The larger cities of Murcia, Orihuela and Elche each have individual characters to explore. Golf resorts like the prestigious La Marquesa, Villamartin and La Finca are all just a short drive away.

Community

At the last census, San Fulgencio had around 12,500 inhabitants and nearly three-quarters of those were international. However, it remains a close-knit community, consisting of Spanish, British, German, Belgium, Dutch, and Scandinavian families.

Property

In San Fulgencio, most of the real estate lies in the urbanised areas and consists mainly of detached properties set in tree-lined roads or park areas with shared sports facilities

Amenities

The Fincas De La Vega or La Escuera urbanisations are small residential estates with plenty of amenities. San Fulgencio has a regular market and there are large shopping centres in Elche, Torrevieja, and La Zenia Boulevard.

Transport

The nearest airports are Murcia and Alicante. There is a local bus service running from Elche to Guardamar, which also travels through the nearby La Marina urbanisation.

Employment

San Fulgencio is an agricultural village but like many Spanish towns in the 20th century, tourism and property development have emerged as significant income sources.

Health

The closest 24 hour health centre is in Rojales and both Elche and Torrevieja have large hospitals.

Schools

There are a handful of schools in the village, but you will find a far greater choice in the wider area. Both Elche and Torrevieja host reputable international schools and El Limonar International School in Villamartin has been voted the second best international school in Spain by parents.

Cost of Living

It’s easy to live well here, although some of the golfing facilities rank high in price as well as prestige.
