Curiosity... The name of the city of Gallipoli derives from Kale Polis, a name imposed by the Hellenic colonizers from Greece, meaning "beautiful city." In 265 BC, Gallipoli was conquered by the Romans, one of the major powers in Italy at that time. They improved the city’s communication systems by connecting Gallipoli to the Via Traiana, allowing quick passage toward the Balkans, and also expanded and developed the port activities, transforming Gallipoli into a military center and later into a municipality. Subsequently, it was occupied by the Barbarians in 450, who sacked the city, marking one of the most terrible and cruel moments in Gallipoli’s history. During the 500s, Gallipoli, along with most of Salento, was under Byzantine rule for 42 years. Later, in 542 AD, Gallipoli was rebuilt from top to bottom by the Byzantine Empire, which enhanced its defensive structures, including the construction of the castle to defend the historic center of Gallipoli. Gallipoli became one of the most important naval and military centers in the Ionian Sea. During this period, Gallipoli also adopted the Greek-Orthodox religion, along with Byzantine traditions and language. In 710, Gallipoli was visited by Pope Constantine during his journey from Rome to Constantinople. In the 11th century, Gallipoli and Salento were occupied by the Normans, who liberated the city from the Greeks. After a period of peace, the city was subjected to a fierce siege by King Charles I of Anjou, which lasted until 1268. Later, thanks to the continuous growth of port activities, Gallipoli expanded. After various brief dominations, it fell under Spanish rule. During this period, artisanal activities increased, and mercantile traffic became more important, including the trade of oil for lamps, making the city increasingly wealthy and significant. Subsequently, Gallipoli became part of the Kingdom of Naples, and Ferdinand I of Bourbon initiated a series of improvements for the city, most notably the construction of the port. During the Bourbon period, it became the district seat and later, following the unification of Italy, it was transformed into a district capital alongside Lecce and Taranto. Today, Gallipoli has become one of the most important tourist cities in Salento and certainly in Italy. It has learned and continues to improve, increasingly emphasizing tourism while preserving the history and traditions of the Gallipoline people.
